Car Wash Violates Numerous Health Violations

Upon receiving a complaint about unsafe conditions, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) initiated an inspection in March 2023. Shockingly, employees were assigned tasks involving high-pressure water near electrical equipment, including a 480-volt electrical panel not suitable for wet or damp conditions and displaying signs of deterioration.

The investigation uncovered that the Car Wash management was aware of live electrical hazards within the facility, with employees enduring electrical shocks repeatedly. Despite this knowledge, the company allowed employees to continue working under these hazardous conditions and took several weeks to address the issue after the incident.

The Violations

Inspectors also found rusty electrical boxes with live wires, improper use of flexible cords, and restrooms lacking properly grounded outlets. These findings revealed that workers were exposed to potential electrical shocks. Furthermore, multiple energized electrical cabinets and boxes were not guarded to prevent contact with live parts.

The list of safety violations included failing to use lockout procedures, neglecting training on energy control procedures, inadequate working space around electrical equipment, and failing to train unqualified individuals on safety-related electrical work practices.

Conclusion

Following the inspection, OSHA cited the parent company of the Car Wash, for one willful and twelve serious safety and health violations, proposing penalties totaling $256,707. The parent company, based in North Carolina, is a publicly traded parent company providing consumer and commercial automotive services. This incident serves as a stark reminder that safety must never be compromised, no matter the size or industry of a business. Creating a safe workplace is not just about compliance but is crucial for the well-being and protection of all employees.
